President’s Day Penny

Penny PaintingThere’s more than one way to shade with watercolor paint. For a more subtle result, try making several layers of one color to add some shadows to your art. This penny is made by tracing the art onto a coffee filter, and then painting brown, some areas more than others. A pretty fun way to mix art and history.

PREP: Flatten white coffee filters with a steam iron. My sample is 9.5″ wide. Tape filter to a printed Penny Template on letter size paper.

  1. Students trace the penny art onto the filter with a Sharpie marker.
  2. The filter is painted entirely with one layer of brown watercolor paint. Let dry about 10 minutes and then painting the shadow areas with another layer. A real penny for reference might be helpful.
